Kuwait - Irak
1991 ist der Irak in Kuwait einmarschiert. Seit dem sind die Beziehungen der beiden Länder schwierig und teilweise angespannt.
Es gibt ein Übereinkommen, dass das Passieren der Landgrenzen ausnahmslos mit einem Visum geschehen muss.
Vom Irak aus nach Kuwait zu kommen ist kein Problem. Einfach online ein kuwaitisches Visum beantragen (dauert ca. 24-48h, ab Erhalt kann man innerhalb von 4 Wochen nach Kuwait einreisen) und die Grenze passieren.
Andersherum, von Kuwait in den Irak zu kommen ist deutlich komplizierter. Europäer bekommen im Irak eigentlich ein Visum on arrival. (Seit 03/2021)

Kuwait - Iraq
In 1991 Iraq invaded Kuwait. Since then the relations between both countries are difficult.
For the land borders they made an agreement which says that it is mandatory for everyone having a visa to cross the border.
The direction from Iraq into Kuwait is easy. Just apply online for the Kuwait Visa (issuing takes 24-48h, validity to enter Kuwait is one month) and go.
Opposite side, Kuwait to Iraq is much more difficult.
Visa regulations for European citizens for Iraq are visa on arrival. (Since 03/2021)
Aber wie bereits erwähnt ist es für diese Grenze ausnahmslos nötig ein irakisches Visum zu haben.
Es gibt zwei Optionen dieses zu bekommen (ausgenommen die Visa on arrival Option):
- Ein Iraker kann im Irak beim "Department of immigration" eine Einladung/Erlaubnis beantragen. (Dauert ca. 3-4 Wochen) Mit dieser Erlaubnis kann ein Visa bei der irakischen Botschaft ausgestellt werden. (Dauert ca. 10 Tage)
- Zur Botschaft des eigenen Landes gehen, das Problem erklären (dass man durch den Irak möchte aber ein Visum braucht) und sagen, dass sie einen Brief zu diesem Problem an die irakische Botschaft schreiben sollen. Mit diesem Brief VERSUCHT die irakische Botschaft dann ein Visum ausstellen zu dürfen. (Dauert ca. 14 Tage)
Wenn man es dann geschafft hat ein irakisches Visum zu bekommen benötigt man noch eine Erlaubnis die Grenze passieren zu dürfen. Dies ist ein grünes Papier welches das "Department of Ports" am Flughafen Kuwait ausstellt.
But as mentioned above, you definitely need a visa in advance to cross from Kuwait to Iraq through the land border.
So how to get the visa (without the visa on arrival option):
⁃ An Iraqi citizen in Iraq can apply for you at the department of immigration to get an invitation/permission in Iraq. (Takes around 3-4 weeks) With this permission you can get a visa at the Iraqi Embassy in Kuwait City. (Takes around 10 days)
⁃ Go to the embassy of your own country. Tell them about the problem (you just want to cross Iraq and you need an Iraqi visa). They should write a letter to the Iraqi Embassy that you need a (Transit-) Visa. With this letter the Iraqi Embassy will TRY to issue you a visa. (Will also take around 14 days)
So if you were lucky to mange it having an Iraqi Visa you need a permit to cross the border from the Kuwait side. This is a green paper and you get it at the Ports department at Kuwait Airport.

Die Treppe rechts in den ersten Stock nehmen. Durch die Tür betritt man ein großes quadratisches Büro. In der hinteren linken Ecke sitzen 4-5 Frauen in einem Kreis an ihren Schreibtischen. Diese sind zuständig das grüne Papier auszustellen. Sie werden dazu das irakische Visum verlangen.
Zur Zeit benötigt man auch einen PCR Test. Dieser kostet ca. 6KD (18€) pro Person. In diesem Gebiet sind eine Menge Teststationen verfügbar: 29.3478138, 48.0168112
Nach all unseren Recherchen und Informationen müsste es dann klappen die Grenze mit diesen Dokumenten zu passieren.
Alles dauert... Die Zeit haben wir momentan nicht und haben daher entschieden zu verschiffen.
Es scheint auch so, dass es die einzige Landesgrenze ist, welche keine Visa on arrival ausstellt. Bspw. von Jordanien aus in den Irak sollte es funktionieren. Sicherheit und aktuelle Informationen im Irak prüfen!
Noch ein Hinweis: Saudi Arabien hat KEINE Grenze zu Irak welche offen ist für Personenverkehr. Nur Waren und Transport.

Take the stairs on the right side to reach the first floor. Enter the door. You will find a big office in the shape of a square. In the back left corner you find around 4-5 woman sitting in a circle on there desks.
Ask them for the permit to cross the border to Iraq (green paper). They will issue it when you show your Iraqi visa.
Right now you also need a PCR Test.
It costs around 6KD (around 18€) per person. In this area you can find a lot of clinics to do it 29.3478138, 48.0168112.
According to all the information we received, you should be able to cross the border with these documents.
But everything needs time which we don’t have right now. So we decided to ship our car.
After all informations it seems like this is the only land border where they (Iraq) don’t issue visa on arrival. So the border from Jordan to Irak should be more easy. Beware of the safety in Iraq!
One more advice: Saudi Arabia does not have any border to Iraq open for passengers! Just for commercial and transport.
